Introduction & Impact
Goodly Creatures is devoted to enriching the communities we serve with a love for the arts.
With professional performances from actors across the greater Chicagoland area, Goodly's Shakespeare in the Park is a lively and fun experience for all ages. Goodly Creatures began as a small ensemble of eight actors, and a crew of four. Now, Goodly Creatures offers full scale productions to communities across the Fox Valley. Our Shakespeare in the Park series has garnered over a thousand audience members every summer across our venues, and has touched the lives of audience members in profound ways. Every year, children ask for photographs with our performers, and we’ve even inspired fan art.
Purpose
Our mission for our Shakespeare in the Park series is to provide the public, especially young people, an opportunity to be exposed to and enjoy Shakespeare’s comedies in a family friendly way.
To do this, we hire experienced performers from across Chicago and the greater Chicagoland area, with backgrounds in performance, literature, and classic plays. We endeavor to make our performances accessible to the audience, providing a synopsis for our venues to share in their print programs, and a director’s note on our digital programs that discusses the core themes of the play. We are the “gateway” to Shakespeare, showing young people that there is nothing to fear when it comes to the Bard, setting them up for success in school, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the classics.
